2G scam: CBI to send CD for forensic test

A day after reports of an alleged collusion between a CBI special prosecutor, AK Singh, and managing director of Unitech, Sanjay Chandra, came out, the CBI sources said the voice samples of the duo have not been taken yet. ‘The two who are alleged to be in conversation in the CD, which CBI received a few days ago, may have refused to give their voice samples which they can do as per the law,’ the sources claimed.

CBI director, Ranjit Sinha on Tuesday said that they have removed the prosecutor from 2G case probe and an preliminary inquiry has been initiated. The CBI, after receiving the anonymous CD in which the public prosecutor is alleged to be discussing certain points regarding prosecution strategy with the 2G accused, removed Singh from trial’s prosecution team. The agency, however, remained tight-lipped on the source of the CD and on whether it was illegally taped or not. The case is currently under trial in Patiala House Court in New Delhi.

The CBI director added, the court has been informed of the developments. Besides, another prosecutor has been appointed to the team to assist in the ongoing trial. According to the CBI the prosecutor allegedly shared the legal strategy with the accused. ‘We have constituted a team of CBI officials who will find if any damage has been done in this connection,’ the CBI director said.

The CBI officials said that they will send the CD for forensic examination after which it will be ascertained whether the CD is genuine or not. These tapes may have been recorded in September/October, the officials added.

The CBI officials added that though the concerned persons have been questioned by them, nothing can be confirmed as nothing is established yet. Essar group had been involved in a similar controversy in 2011 when the CBI’s Director of Prosecution Abdul Aziz had recused himself from proceedings on Essar-Loop – embroiled in the 2G scam – owing to his son’s association with these companies. Aziz’s son, Adnan, has been employed with Essar and Loop since 1 October, 2009.
