29-year-old national-level shot put player turned-criminal held for murder

Delhi Police arrested a 29-year-old former national-level shot put athlete in connection with the murder of one Amit Hoti in the Jharoda Kalan area. According to the police, the arrested youth identified as Deepak aspired to become a gangster just like Vikas Lagarpuria of his area to pursue a lavish lifestyle. In pursuit of becoming a gangster, he even started his own gang and was arrested in 2008 in connection in a carjacking case in Bahadurgarh.

On May 18, 2015, Deepak along with his cousin, Ravi Dagar and his friend Bhanja shot dead one Amit since the latter was mounting pressure on Ravi to return his Rs 10 lakh. They planned to eliminate Amit. They took their car and fired at him after which they all fled from the spot, said police on Thursday.

Police said that although Ravi and Bhanja were arrested by the Kanjhawala police, Deepak had been absconding ever since and was declared a proclaimed offender.

A senior police official said that the Special Staff of the South-west district had launched a drive against the dreaded criminals active in the area. As per the task, a team started monitoring, verifying and trailing the activities of several suspects in the area.

On September 28, police received a secret information that an accused wanted in some murder case was seen in Village Jharoda Kalan. This information was further developed. Based on this, police raided and Deepak was arrested outside his house.

“During sustained interrogation, Deepak revealed that he fell in bad company at an early age. To fulfill his lavish lifestyle, he resorted to criminal activities and formed a gang with young boys from the area. He was inspired from area 

gangsters and involved himself in criminal activities like car-jackings. In 2008, he was arrested in a car-jacking case in Bahadurgarh,” said a senior police officer.
