29 Bangla opposition leaders accused

Police on Thursday pressed charges against 29 detained leaders of main opposition BNP and its rightwing allies in a second case accusing them of masterminding last month's blasts inside Bangladesh secretariat. Court officials said detective branch of police submitted the charge-sheet before a metropolitan magistrate accusing BNP's acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the 28 others for the April 28 explosion inside the secretariat during a nationwide opposition enforced shutdown.
The new charges were pressed against the opposition leaders just 20 days after 45 leaders and activists of BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance including Alamgir were charged with torching a vehicle near the Prime Minister's Office during the shutdown.
Two home-made bombs exploded in the Secretariat during April 29 shutdown, enforced by the opposition alliance, protesting mysterious disappearance of BNP organising secretary Ilias Ali.
Police filed two cases that night with Shahbagh and Tejgaon police accusing the senior opposition leaders over the blasts and torching of a bus in front of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) during the shutdown. A Dhaka court earlier this month sent to jail 33 stalwarts of BNP and its allies including Alamgir as they appeared with bail petitions after being charged for masterminding violence during the stoppage. Alamgir and the others surrendered before the court in line with a High Court directive as they were charged for masterminding violence.
