26-yr-old murdered in Ggn, honour killing suspected

The woman was identified as Jyoti, who worked at a private bank in Gurgaon and stayed with her family at Bhora Kalan village in NH-8. She was about to get married on February 20, with a man from Bhiwani district, said a source.

“On February 12, Jyoti was found dead at her residence. It was her family members who called up the police. When they reached the spot, Jyoti’s body was found lain straight on a bed. Her family members even handed over a long rope to the cops, with which Jyoti had allegedly hanged herself to death. A case of suicide was registered and the body of the deceased was sent for a postmortem examination,” said the police official investigating the case.

On February 14, Jyoti’s autopsy report suggested that she died of suffocation, which could be related to a case of strangulation and lesser so with incidence of hanging, said the official. He further added that the section of law mentioned in the FIR was changed to 302 (murder) of IPC immediately and all family members of the girl are now being questioned, to investigate whether the family members tried to mislead the cops. Without ruling out that it could be an honour killing case, the police, however, refrained from drawing conclusions as investigation is underway.

Another official said, the police suspects that the woman was first allegedly strangulated to death and then hanged by the accused, not ascertained yet, to allegedly make it look like a case of suicide. No note was found.
