25 years of ‘lighting lamps of knowledge’

With a vision of sustainable inclusive learning that gives universal and flexible access to quality school education and skill development, the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was set up on 23 November 1989 as an autonomous institution by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. On Friday, it celebrated its foundation day in Delhi.

The silver jubilee celebrations of the NIOS was inaugurated by Abdul Kalam, former president of India. Delivering the foundation day lecture, Kalam shared his delight of being a part of this event and focussed on the main topic which was ‘Light a Lamp of Knowledge’ and further he shared his experiences of knowing a lady Sethu Ramaswamy an unknown Indian Woman with an indormitable spirit to acquire a masters degree at the age of 88 and the great spirit of a car driver to obtain a doctorate degree.

Adding further he said that the autobiography of Sethu Ramaswamy ‘Bride at 10 and Mother at 15’ is an epitome of inspiration that age does not matter at all if you have a great aim then all you do is achieve, achieve and only achieve. ‘It’s all about having a vision and acting as an employement generator and seeker too’, added Kalam.

While recalling the dedication of some of his teachers, he urged all teachers present on the occasion to radiate knowledge and be true facilitators of learning. He made the teachers take an oath promising ‘First and foremost I love teaching and teaching will be my soul shaping the students and igniting them I will continue myself for a great teacher. I will bring an average to the Best performer by the way of my teaching the class. I will be a mother, a father in whole a builder and will impart quality education with constant endeavour’.

The NIOS also conferred awards for the the Best Co-ordinator, Best Study Centres and the Best Regional Centre. Also, the successfullearners of NIOS felicitated for their achievements. The entire day’s programme aired through Mukta Vidya Vani on the NIOS web site.

‘NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides general and academic courses at secondary and senior secondary level. It also offers elementary level courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE). Government of India, through a gazette notification, vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it upto pre degree level courses,’ chairman, NIOS, SS Jena said.

Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State, MHRD, said ‘The adoption of an intelligent paradigm of ODL education can go a long way in providing quality education’. He pointed out, that the ‘NIOS should be a part of an endeavour to provide a well integrated system complimented with quality skill education’.

The first silver jubilee lecture titled ‘A New Paradigm for Open Distance Learning for India’ was delivered by M B Menon, assistant vice-chancellor of Wasan University, Penang, Malaysia.
