25 child labourers rescued, three held

Twenty-five children working in rice export units in Alipur were today rescued and their three employers arrested, an NGO said.

The child labourers were rescued following a tip-off provided by Bachpan Bachao Andolan.The rescue operation was led by Sub Divisional Magistrate Rajneesh Kumar Singh. Police personnel, members from Labour Department and activists of Bachpan Bachao Andolan wer part of the raiding party, a statement issued by BBA said.

All children are below the age of 15 years, the youngest being nine-year-old. According to BBA, the children were trafficked by local agents from the villages of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and were engaged in the rice export unit work wherein they used to stitch bags for rice storage.

‘They used to work for at least 10 hours a day, for a daily income of Rs 20 to Rs 50,' R S Chaurasia, Chairperson of BBA, said. A nine-year-old boy, who was rescued, said, ‘I work for more than 10 hours a day. If we stitch 100 bags we get Rs 100. But I am only able to make Rs 20 a day.’
