24-yr-old woman molested, beaten up by miscreants

A 24-year-old woman was seriously injured after being beaten up by some drunken youth when she protested against their misbehaviour. The incident took place at Nimta in North 24-Parganas on Sunday night.

Police have arrested one person in this connection so far while three other accused are still at large. The investigating officers are conducting raids to nab the culprits.

Police said that the woman was returning home after buying some medicines from a nearby shop when she saw the four accused consuming liquor by the roadside. She paced up to flee from the area. But the accused started stalking her and were using abusive language. When she protested, the accused began to molest her. When she tried to free herself from them, they beat her up. The victim received injuries in her face and other parts of the body.

After hearing the screaming of the victim, local people rushed to the spot and rescued her. Meanwhile, the accused fled from the spot. The victim was taken to a local hospital. After her release from the hospital, the woman on Monday lodged a complaint at a local police station on the basis of which the police arrested one of the accused. They are conducting a search in the nearby areas to nab the other culprits.

The local residents of the area on Monday staged a protest against the anti-social activities in the area. They alleged that despite their repeated pleas, the police failed to take any action against local miscreants who often tease women and booze in public in some areas after the sunset. They claimed that such incidents are on the rise as police are not vigilant enough to contain such elements.

The woman is yet to recover from the shock that she had to go through last night. The victim told the police that she was attacked by the miscreants when she protested against their misbehaviour. She also told the investigating officers that the accused were in an inebriated state and abused her as the area was lonely.
