21-yr-old fruit vendor run-over by DTC bus

A 21-year-old man was crushed to death by a DTC cluster bus in New Delhi’s Parliament Street area on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was later identified as Salman Khan, who worked as a fruit vendor near Parliament Street. Around 5 pm on Wednesday, he was crossing the road, when the DTC cluster bus crushed him. Salman was a resident of Ghaziabad, said a police official. The bus was heading towards Jantar Mantar and it was the driver who got off the vehicle and rushed Salman to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Salman’s body was sent for a post-mortem and later handed over to his family. Some eye witnesses also claimed that he was not cautious enough while crossing the road and did not see the bus approaching. The driver applied the brakes, but still couldn’t avoid hitting him.

The matter was reported to the police and a case under Section 279 (rash driving on a public way) and 304A (causing death by negligence) was registered at the Parliament Street police station. Driver, Nikhilesh Kumar (40) has been arrested.
