21-yr-old college girl dies in road accident at Bongaon

A college student died in a road accident at Bongaon, North 24 Parganas. Police said, Priyanka Das, a 21-year-old girl was going to her college riding a scooter. A speeding bus hit her from behind.

“The girl was riding motorbike without wearing a helmet. She fell on the road and came under the wheels of the bus. She died on the spot,” said a police officer.

The girl was a third year student of geography honours. “Her body was sent to post-mortem. Her parents lodged complaint against the owner of the bus,” said the officer.

“We have started a case. The accused driver escaped from the spot. But we’ll arrest him soon,” the officer added.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a stone loaded lorry tried to avoid a jackal which came suddenly on the middle of the road, hit a bicycle on Bagzola Road of Baduria, North 24 Parganas, claiming the life of a 35-year-old person on Tuesday.

The brother of the deceased, who was riding pillion in the bicycle, had a narrow escape from the injuries. The infuriated mob ransacked the truck and later, they set the truck on fire. They blocked the Bagzola Road for several hours and stopped the vehicular movement for a long time. Police said that Sokor Ali Mondal the bicycle rider was riding his cycle along the road and his brother Mominuddin was riding pillion.

In Malda, a road accident claimed the life of a person at English Bazar early on Monday. Police said, a private car rammed onto a heavy goods loaded truck and caused the accident near English Bazar crossing.

Police learnt that the private car was coming from Malda’s Dhora area. “Rash driving is common here in English Bazar. But Malda police is also taking actions against the errant drivers. I am sure that the situation will improve in the near future,” said a local resident.
