20 killed as bus falls off cliff in China

At least 20 members of an opera troupe were killed and 13 others injured on Tuesday when a bus carrying them fell off a cliff in China’s central Henan Province.

The accident took place in the early hours of the morning near the boundary between Xinxiang City and Linzhou City, according to local rescue headquarters.

The bus with 33 staff of a privately owned opera troupe from Xingyang City in Henan Province was heading for Linzhou.

The vehicle was rented by the troupe, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today. All the injured have been hospitalised. The bus was designed to carry 35 people. Xinhua also carried a picture showing the mangled bus among trees.

Major road accidents are common in China, particularly on remote and often poorly maintained roads.
