2, including juvenile, caught for stealing Rs 2-cr jewellery

The Delhi Police have arrested a man for allegedly being involved in theft of diamond jewellery pieces worth Rs 2 crore in East Delhi’s Preet Vihar area. His accomplice, a juvenile, has also been apprehended, the police said on Sunday.

The police said the arrested was identified as Vinay, adding that all stolen jewellery pieces were recovered from his possession.

According to the police, the incident took place on Wednesday when one Vijay Gupta, who works as a commission agent for gems and jewel traders, was returning to his home in Patparganj with a bag, containing the ornaments.

The accused had allegedly been following Gupta from Karkardooma and had punctured the tyre of his car.

“It was when Gupta stopped near the Karkari More red light to get his car’s tyre fixed that the juvenile broke open his vehicle’s windowpane and the duo fled with the bag,” said a senior police officer.

A case was registered at the Preet Vihar police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“We got clue about Vinay through the footage recorded by CCTV cameras, installed in nearby areas. A team of officials from the Preet Vihar police station nabbed him from South Delhi’s Madangir area. His juvenile accomplice has also been apprehended,” the officer added. According to the police, Vinay has earlier been involved in five cases of snatching and theft.
