2 dead as residential building catches fire

A 38-year-old mentally challenged man and a 30-year-old woman died due to suffocation when a fire broke out at a residential building in Central Delhi’s West Patel Nagar area on Monday morning. The deceased persons have been identified as Rajesh Bandola, alias Rinku, and Sneha respectively.

According to the fire department, the incident took place at around 8.24 am on Monday morning when Rajesh, the owner of the four-storey building was trying to burn some junk which was stored on the ground floor of the residential building. A fire official said that five fire tenders were rushed to the spot and it took them half an hour to douse the flames. According to the police, legal action will be taken once the fire department submits an enquiry report to them.

A senior police official said that, the woman, Sneha who used to live on the second floor died due to suffocation while Rajesh died of the same reason after getting stuck in his room.

According to the official, Rajesh met with an accident many years ago which left him mentally unstable. He used to collect junk items from the colony roads and kept it stored in a room at his house.

The official further added that the fire could have broken out probably due to the heaps of junk items which were stored at the ground floor of the house, catching fire.

According to the police, Sneha was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival while Rajesh could not be rescued.

Meanwhile, the fire department official confirmed that there were no other casualties or injuries reported in the incident.

According to the senior police official, investigation has started and appropriate action will be taken only after the fire department submits a report.
