19-year-old gang-rape, murder accused arrested

Delhi Police have arrested a 19-year-old boy who was involved in a gang-rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl in Bihar in 2011. However, the other three accused are still absconding, police said on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Arjun Mahto, a resident of Tilak Nagar. He is a school drop-out and in the year 2011, when he was a juvenile, he was involved in a brutal gang-rape and murder of a village girl in Bihar with three of his other associates. He was on the run for over one year before he could be apprehended in 2013. In July 2014, he escaped from the Bihar Police’s custody and shifted to Delhi.

“Mahto started committing crimes and with the passage of time graduated in crimes like snatching and auto-lifting. He was planning to procure sophisticated weapons and return to Bihar, with the motive to constitute his own gang in Bihar. But before he could give shape to his sinister plans, he was arrested.

One stolen motor cycle has been recovered from his possession,” said Surender Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West).

At about 6:30 pm, Mahto arrived in Uttam Nagar area, who was apprehended with a tip off from a secret informer. A motor cycle was recovered from his possession. On verification, the bike was found to be a stolen one. Further, on sustained interrogation, he confessed his involvement in an incident of gang-rape-cum-murder case in Sitamarhi, Bihar, and further confessed that in July 2014, he escaped from the custody of Bihar Police and shifted to Delhi.

Further investigation is in progress and efforts are being made to arrest the co-accused, Kumar said.
