18-yr-old mows down cop in Welcome, motorist did not have licence

A 54-year-old Head Constable was mowed down by a speeding car allegedly driven by an 18-year-old youth, who did not have a driving licence, near North-East Delhi Welcome Metro station on Sunday morning.

The incident took place around 8.30 am when Head Constable Naresh Pal Malik was going to his workplace on his scooter, police said. When he reached near the Welcome Metro station, he was hit by a speeding car. As a result, he lost the control and fell on road.

Police said the  errant car driver, Shubham, tried to flee, but was caught by local residents. According to the police, Shubham, who recently turned 18, does not have a driving licence. He has been detained for questioning.

The police rushed Malik to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The police have informed his family members. His body will be handed over to his family after the  post-mortem examination, which is likely to be conducted on Monday.

Malik, who had joined the Delhi Police in 1982, was a Head Constable at the Special Branch and was a resident of Surya Vihar in Ghaziabad.

A case under sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Shubham and further investigation is underway, police said, adding that the accused’s car has been impounded.
