In a bizarre incident, around 16 street dogs and two cats were poisoned to death by smugglers operating along the Indo-Bangladesh border at Balurghat in South Dianjpur.
The animals came in the way and barked that alerted BSF personnel. Thus encounters with the security forces became frequent. To get rid of this, the criminals with the help of some locals poisoned their food.
The incident which happened at the Hili area of South Dinajpur late Sunday night has triggered a spark in the locality and also prompted the senior administrative officials to visit the spot.Senior police officer in the district, joint Block Development Officer of Hili reached the spot along with the senior BSF officers.
On the basis of the complaint lodged by the local people in the Hili police station, police and BSF have started a joint investigation into the incident. The carcasses of these animals have been sent for the post-mortem examinations.
