16 December gangrape accused beaten, hand broken in jail: Lawyer

Vinay Sharma, one of the accused in the Delhi gangrape case, came to the fast track court on Friday with a fractured hand and pleaded to the judge to not send him back to Tihar Jail. Taking note of his condition, Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna on Friday directed Tihar Jail Superintendent to appear before it on Saturday to reply to the allegation by the accused that he was badly beaten up by prison inmates on Thursday night.

‘You can get me killed here but don’t send me to Tihar Jail, I feel afraid there. I will jump from here but will not go to Tihar,’ Vinay’s counsel AP Singh, on behalf of his client, told the court. The counsel also said that his client’s hand was broken by the jail inmates to stop him from appearing in a written test for Indian Air Force scheduled for 7 April.

Taking note of the condition of the accused, the court directed that further security and safety of all the four accused should be ensured by jail officials.

It sought reply from the superintendent of Jail number 7 and directed him to personally appear before the court on Saturday. ‘In view of the above, it is directed that medical examination of accused including X-ray should be done and brought to the court tomorrow also,’ the court said.

On Thursday, another accused in the case had alleged in court that he was receiving life threats in the jail from a police constable who was continuously abusing him.

A few days back, accused Vinay Sharma’s counsel had told the court that his client had got a call letter to appear for an interview with the Indian Air Force and a tutor should be provided to him. Later, Tihar Jail authorities had told the court that they would ensure that he gets requisite facilities in jail to prepare for his tests. Later, Sharma had also asked for nutritious food inside the jail.
