14 including nine policemen injured in clash

Around 14 people including 9 police personnel were injured in a clash that broke out between the local residents and police when the latter went to Deocharai area of Tufangunge in Cooch Behar to stop a function on Sunday.

A police team went to the area after they received complaints from local people that the organisers were playing loud speakers at midnight.

The mob turned furious when the police asked them to stop their function. They attacked the police and pelted stones at them. Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob. But the situation went out of control when the mob tried to snatch the rifles of some of the police personnel.

The local people attacked police with sticks. The officer-in-charge of Tufangung police station was also injured in the incident. The police had to open fire to control the situation.

The irate mob ransacked a police jeep. A huge contingent of police headed by SDPO of Tufangunge had to reach the spot to bring the situation under control. Police said that organisers were using loudspeakers at midnight that created inconvenience to the residents. Senior police officials have visited the place on Sunday morning and ordered a high level inquiry into the incident.
