14 children injured as school bus crashes into railing

Fourteen children were injured when a school bus collided against a railing on the side of the road near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident took place at around 6.30 am on Friday.

Police said that almost each and every student in the bus received injuries. All were taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. There were discharged after first aid. The driver of the bus was arrested and the offending vehicle was also taken to the police station.

Manoj Sinha, a local resident who witnessed the incident, said that the bus packed with students of a private English medium school was going at a high speed. It was heading towards Hedua to Belgachia.

The driver of the bus failed to control the vehicle when it was running over the tram tracks and hit the road side railing. There was little drizzle in the morning which made the tram tracks slippery. It seemed that the brakes of the bus didn’t work properly. As a result the bus hit the railings despite brakes were being applied by the driver, a police officer said.

Local people initiated the rescue work. The front portion of the bus was damaged. The local people, later joined by the police, took the students to the hospital. The school authorities were informed. They rushed to the spot and handed over to the students to the parents after the first aid.

The area remains congested even in the morning as hundreds of people enters and leaves RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Some of the people had a narrow escape as they had managed to move from the place finding the bus approaching towards them.

It may be recalled that a few days ago a school bus hit a pillar of Maa Flyover near Parama Island. The driver of the bus had died but he had somehow saved the students from getting much injured.
