12 soldiers killed, 8 injured in militant attack in Egypt

Twelve Egyptian soldiers were killed and eight injured in a terrorist attack on an army checkpoint in the Sinai Peninsula, which has for years battled Islamist militancy.

The militants targeted a military base about 80 kilometres east of the Suez Canal, local media reported. Unknown gunmen opened fire on a checkpoint in central Sinai, attracting retaliatory fire from security forces.
