1,138 motorists fined during Gurgaon’s ‘Car Free Day’

On the second Car Free Day on Tuesday, the maximum of 387 tickets were issued in the East Zone police area, where four major IT sectors are located — DLF Cyber City, Cyber Park area, Golf Course Road and Electronic City. The tally was 351 in West Zone, 243 in the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway zone and 157 in the South Zone. The majority of challans — 337 — were issued for wrong parking, while 157 people were fined for wrong-side driving.

“It was an unfortunate day for police especially at a time when so many new initiatives are underway. This takes the focus away from the good work being done by us,” said
Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk.

“The law-breakers will have to face consequences,” said another senior traffic police official. However, after the spat between the top cops of Gurgaon, there was no sense of an achievement, no ready figures either to back up the success story unlike last Tuesday when the police claimed there were 10,000 fewer cars on the roads.

After taking rounds of the four designated corridors this Tuesday, there were cars parked in the Cyber City area in a marked departure from last Tuesday.

On his part, Virk tried to portray the success of Car-Free Day, but the only thing that came to light was the winners of the Car-Free-Day-Selfie contest, which gained most of the attention on social media.
