10-yr-old saves father’s life by dialing 100

A 10-year-old girl saved the life of her father by dialing the emergency help line of the Kolkata Police when she found him attempting suicide by setting himself on fire in their house at South Sinthee here on Tuesday morning.

Police said the girl dialed 100 at around 8.50 am and informed the matter to police.

An on-duty officer in the control room received her call. She informed the policeman that her father was attempting suicide.

She gave her address and sought their help. The on-duty police immediately contacted the officer-in-charge of Sinthee police station Raghu Nath Thakur.

Policemen from the police station and at the same time those were patrolling in the area rushed to the house.

They found that the victim Rajib Khanna had already set himself on fire inside the kitchen, which was locked from inside and the girl was crying for help.

The policemen broke open the door and doused the flames.

They took him to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where he was admitted with around 35 per cent burn injuries.

Later, police came to know that Khanna decided to commit suicide as he had a fight with his father Ram Kumar Khanna on Monday night.

There was an altercation on Tuesday morning as well. Other members of the family had tried to stop
him but they failed and he entered the kitchen to commit suicide.

The girl dialed 100 after she found everyone failing to stop her father from committing suicide. Doctors in the hospital later stated Khanna’s health to be stable.

Malati Bajaj, a local resident, said that it was the sheer intelligence of the little girl that saved her father.

She also thanked the Kolkata Police for creating awareness about the emergency helpline number that even a small girl knows about it.
