10-year-old-boy mowed to death

A 10 year old school boy was crushed to death by a speeding lorry on Ganesh Chandra Avenue under Bowbazar police station on Monday. City police arrested the lorry driver and seized the vehicle. The police said that the deceased, Mohammad Aziz, and his father were crossing the road when the lorry came at a high speed and hit the boy. He collapsed on the ground and started bleeding profusely. He was taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

On Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the state government would take necessary steps to curb road accidents. “The Motor Vehicles Act is a Central Act and so the state governments could not do much. But something should be done to curb road accidents,” she said.

She said people were often found driving vehicles recklessly without having any consideration for the pedestrians. Many are often found to be driving over the speed limit.

Young bikers ride their vehicles at breakneck speed, causing road accidents almost every day.
According to the Chief Minister this needs to be curbed and the state government is planning schemes to reduce the number of accidents.
