10 killed as building collapses in Delhi

10 people, including five children, were killed, and two others critically injured when a four-storeyed building collapsed in Tulsi Nagar area of Inder lok in north Delhi. The incident occurred at around 9 am on Saturday.

The police said construction work was on at an adjacent building and that might have caused the building collapse as it weakened the building’s base. The 25-square-metre building was over 50 years old and inside a narrow street. It was reportedly an illegal construction. There were five families who stayed in three floors floor of the building.

Praveen Kumar Gupta, North Delhi Commissioner of MCD, has ordered suspension of an assistant engineer and a junior engineer. ‘ An additional commissioner (engineering) has been deputed to conduct a probe in connection with the matter. He will submit a report within seven days,’ Gupta said. Five ambulances and a team of firemen with four fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The police said 14 people trapped under the debris were saved with the help of locals.

The injured were admitted to Bara Hindu Rao hospital and Acharya Shree Bhikshu Hospital. Seven people, belonging to two separate families, resided at the third and fourth floors of the building and died in the collapse, while three relatives residing at the second floor of the building also lost their lives in the tragedy. Two adjacent buildings were vacated by the police as some parts of those buildings were affected.
