At least one person was killed and 30 others, including 15 children, went missing on Thursday, after a boat carrying mostly Hindu devotees capsized in a river in southwestern Bangladesh. “One person was killed and 30 others, including 15 children, went missing as the boat capsized in the Kumar river,” the Samoy TV channel reported.
Madaripur Police chief confirmed the incident but did not give the details, saying “our officials are on their way to the accident scene”.
The boat was carrying more than 100 people and it capsized after a head-on collision with a vessel in the river, an eyewitness was quoted as saying. The engine-run boat was carrying mostly Hindu devotees who were returning home after Janmastami celebrations at a nearby area. Several passengers were rescued by other boats.
