Solving the mystery behind the murder of the 65-year-old woman in Taltala, police on Monday arrested a relative of the victim from her residence at Hedua.

The elderly woman Alo Majumder was strangulated to death in her room situated in the ground floor of a two-storey house at Taltala on February 5.

Investigation revealed that she was being killed for restricting someone from decamping with valuables from her room.

On Monday officers from the city police’s detective department arrested Moumita Bislani. She is sister-in-law of the victim’s brother. According to an investigating officer, the accused had visited the victim’s residence in evening. But instead of returning home, she was hiding somewhere inside the victim’s room.

She had opened the cupboard after the victim fell asleep and packed all valuables including jewellery and cash in a bag. But she was caught as the elderly woman woke up when some articles fell on the floor.

Bislani then strangled her and fled with the valuables.

The victim’s brother Mohanlal Adhya, who stays in the first floor of the same building, told the police that he knew that his sister-in-law had visited their house the previous day of the incident. But he was unaware that she was hiding somewhere inside the victim’s room. He also told the police that she was passing through financial problem and had been staying with a lawyer. Recently Bislani’s relation with the lawyer had also deteriorated.

The accused was remanded in police custody till February 25 after being produced before court. Police has recovered the stolen jewellery from the residence of the accused.

A police officer said that one more person may get arrested in this connection. “But his name and other details cannot be revealed for the sake of investigation,” the officer said.
