Withdrawal of nuclear umbrellas by great powers may result in the formation of more countries and thus give rise to more wars in the future. This was stated by retired vice admiral, Shekhar Sinha, former flag officer commanding-in-chief, western naval command. He was talking on future wars on the first day of the two-day 11th Subroto Mukherjee Seminar, organised by the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS) here.
The theme of the session was ‘The Centrality of Air Power’. The session was chaired by the Air Chief Marshal (retd) SP Tyagi. The panelists were, Air Vice Marshal Upkarjit Singh, air officer commanding (Jammu and Kashmir), VADM Shekhar Sinha (retd), and Amb Sheel Kant Sharma, secretary general SAARC.
Upkarjit Singh elaborated on the IAF’s relentless service during Op Megh Rahat. In the operation conducted on a war footing, about 85 aircraft were pressed into service in the limited air space of Srinagar; approximately 2,883 sorties were undertaken and. About 4,454 tonnes of relief material was air lifted. Over 40,000 flood victims were evacuated from the affected parts of J&K.
Sharma on the other hand, had the onerous task of visualising the world in 2025. He advocated that the relentless rise of China, overtaking the USA by 2016, in terms of total gross domestic product in purchasing power parity norm. He also saw India and Pakistan remaining within the familiar matrix of attrition. The spread of Wahabi Islam would continue even if Saudi Arabia curtails its funding of the Islamist fundamentalism.
