Singh wows Beijing, says 'India welcomes Chinese emergence'

Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh on Thursday in Beijing moved away from a script that Washington had been subtly writing and handing down to India, seeking to guide its actions in the Asia Pacific region. In his speech delivered at the Central Party School, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) ideological powerhouse, he said that the idea of “containment” needs to be shelved in the 21st century.

Post-Pacific “pivot” from an Atlanticist approach, the USA had been pushing the Indian policymakers towards taking a more muscular approach in the region, powered by the increasing reach of the Indian Navy. This was seen as an approach to restrain or “contain” China’s increasing influence in its backyard.

Ironically, China is also beset with a series of disputes with the countries of the region relating to ownership of the various islands and islets in the South and East China Seas, and even in the Pacific Ocean. These disputes are being exploited to occasionally pressurise China.
