‘Military-Sharif supremacy tussel leads to LoC killings’

On a day when there was only an exchange of fire with small arms at the Mandher sector, senior echelons of the Army talked about the motivation of the Pakistan army to continue with the tensions on the Line of Control (LoC).

A major general level officer of the Indian Army told Millennium Post that one of the reasons the Pakistan army is behaving in such a fashion is to show supremacy over the newly elected Prime Minister, Mian Nawaz Sharif who is the boss on Pakistan’s ‘India policy.’

However, avid Pakistan watchers of the country feel that at the beginning of the terrorist infiltration season in June-July in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian forces had killed a large number of potential terrorists – 28 by an Army count – and also some Pakistani troops. This had acted as a dampener on the terrorists, who were ready to enter the state. Thus the Pakistan army was compelled to make this show of force.

In fact, a retired major general, Afsir Karim, says it is doubtful that the proposed meeting between Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and Nawaz Sharif to be held in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September will actually take place. ‘I expect that there will be a major terrorist operation on our soil just before the meeting to scuttle it altogether,' Karim said.

Indian armed forces had been particularly aggressive in their operations this season causing serious apprehensions across the border. The decade-old ceasefire – from 2003 - on the LoC thus got violated by both sides.

In the process, as Karim points out, 'The real victims have been the villagers adjacent to the LoC and the thick curtain of tension, along with the incessant firing, disrupts their normal activity completely.'

The Pakistan watchers say that the 'secret war' that has continued to unfold in the J&K, has brought into its ambit the common people, some of whom have lost their lives in secret cross- border attacks by both the contending forces.

Now, this has taken the mien of a vendetta being undertaken by both the forces. Though the army representative says that the Indian side does not expect these cross-LoC firing to continue for more than 48-72 hours.

Soon, there will be conversations at the apex level of the countries’ leadership, which will cap the animosity for the time being.
