Jagjit's ghazals revisited

When Jagjit Singh passed away, the entire nation and the music-loving world went into mourning. The master, known as much for his soulful ghazals which laymen and aficionados swear by as he was known for his soft demeanour, had created fans among commoners and musicians alike. Often touted as the 'god of ghazals', the master was paid a tribute by singer Shashank Shekhar on Thursday evening at Epicentre, Gurgaon. Shekhar enthralled the audience present by recreating the legendary ghazal meastro's songs.

He sang immortal numbers like Hoshwalon ko khabar kya, Yaad nahi kya kya dekhe the, Main nashe me hoon
, Pyaar ka pehla khat, Hazaron khwahishen aisi, and Wo kagaz ki kashti, among others. Shekhar struck a chord by reaching out to all age groups in the auditorium.

'Jagjeet sahab was an inspiration and a mentor for me. I dedicate my performance to him today and I salute this god of ghazals. He will forever live in our hearts through the magic of his music. I am deeply appreciative of the legacy Jagjitji has left behind and I want to keep it alive in my own way,' said Shekhar.

The musician, who has shared the stage with renowned artists like L Subramanyam, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Shubha Mudgal and Pandit Birju Maharaj, ended the musical evening with his own composition Sehra sehra gulshan gulshan geet hamare suniega, followed by a medley comprising of slow and fast ghazals by the artist.
