The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) 18th Congress ended on Thursday as the new general secretary, Xi Jinping, walked into the Great Hall of the People on the Tiananmen Square, accompanied by six colleagues, who have been elevated to the Polit Bureau Standing Committee. This committee is the final arbiter of a country of almost two billion people on how the State, the government and the country will run.
Xi, who will be taking over in March, 2012, as the president of the country, called in his acceptance speech, ‘for a great renewal of the Chinese nation.’ He talked about the people’s yearning for ‘better life’ and pointed out that there were some ‘serious problems among Party members of corruption, taking bribes, being out of touch with the people, and an undue emphasis on going through formalities and bureaucratism.’
This is the change that the Chinese people were being readied to witness for the past five years – a change of leadership that did not come from a natural succession at some one’s death or an extra-political appointment.
This selection was made over credentials that have been built over three or four decades.
Considering that this is the generation who have been born after the Chinese Revolution, their first experience with Mao Zedong was with the Cultural Revolution.
