As the Line of Control (LoC) get scorched by firing from both Pakistan and the Indian sides, the defence minister, AK Antony, told media in the coastal town, that ‘the Army have full freedom to respond (against any exigencies) on the LoC.’ But at the same, he remained reticent in elaborating on it, as he claimed Parliament was in session.
Commenting on the communal flare-up in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, ‘Defence’s position on the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is quite well known.’
In effect, bypassing the political issues of the day, Antony spoke about issues like the delivery of INS Vikaramditya (Admiral Gorshkov) coming in by the end of the year, INS Arihant, the nuclear submarine, which he said will get inducted in the navy by 2018.
He also said that the second batch of submarines, the proposal for P-75I is with the Cabinet Committee on Security, being deliberated.
He also said that on the light combat aircrafts (LCAs), ‘Things are moving fast.’
Asked whether there has been a sharp increase of almost 40 per cent in the price of the M-777 light howitzers, to be imported from the USA under the government-to-government Foreign Military Sales (FMS), he said ‘It is still under negotiation.’
Also, on the final price of the INS Vikrant, the defence minister commented, ‘It is too early to say.’
