Youth shot at in West Delhi for preventing assault on elderly man

A 23-year-old youth was shot at by two men after he tried to prevent them from assaulting an elderly man whose scooter had collided with their motorcycle in west Delhi, police said on Thursday. The incident occured last night around 11.30 pm near Jwalapuri traffic signal in Mianwali area when the elderly man riding a scooter allegedly hit the motorcycle of the accused duo, which resulted in an argument between them. The argument turned violent when the duo began assaulting the elderly man and on seeing this the victim Dheeraj, along with his brother Hemant intervened in the matter to pacify the situation, a senior police official said. After this the accused left but immediately returned along with some other persons and got into an heated argument with Dheeraj, he said. According to the police, during the argument one of accused opened fire which hit Dheeraj in his waist. Up on hearing the gun shot some passersby rushed to the spot but the accused had fled by then. Dheeraj’s condition is stated to be stable and a case of attempt to murder has been registered against unidentified persons, police said, adding, efforts are on to identify the accused. A case of ‘attempt to murder’ has been registered at the Mianwala police station in West Delhi. Dheeraj hails from Uttar Pradesh and lived with his cousin, Hemant, at the DSIDC area. Both of them were partners in a crane service enterprise.
