Youth prefer surgeon’s knife for college

Seems like by hook or crook, students these days want to look good. The students' demand for 'bespoke' appearance no longer stop at shopping for phoren brands. If the city's cosmetic surgeons are to be believed, it apparently include abdominoplasty, breast augmentation/reduction/lift, buttock augmentation, chin implant, eye lift, face lift, liposuction and rhinoplasty.

Dr Sobti, who runs a private clinic at Patel Nagar, said, 'Teenagers and those in their early 20s are the primary clientele for cosmetic surgeries in my clinic. May and June are specially busy for me as a lot of aspiring students come then to make themselves look good before starting classes in colleges.'

Looks, said the students who have opted for artificial enhancement of their assets, determine their success. Said Radhika*, who went through breast lift surgery, 'Personality is important, but when you first meet someone it is how you look and how you present yourself that counts. So, obviously, everyone wants to look beautiful.' For 22-year-old Swati*, it was something she had to do to bolster her fledgling confidence. 'I am not nervous about starting college any more. I'm going with a new look and a new confidence,' she says.

According to Dr D S Tulla, the cosmetic surgeon at BLK Hospital, 'I get dozens of telephone calls and end up doing eight or nine operations a month. And maximum operations are done during May and June.'

'I am scheduled for a (male) breast reduction surgery. I had to do that. My school friends used to make fun of me. I don't want the same to happen to me in college as well,' said Piyush*.

Rekha, mother of one of the girls who recently opted for cosmetic surgery, blames television and films for the intense pressure the college-goers of today are subjected to. According to her, they have no option but to look good and stylish. 'Watching the actors and actresses, our children also dream of looking as beautiful as these people on screen. Can we really blame them? Just look at the newspapers, they are full of advertisements for cosmetic surgeries. No wonder they think it is normal to choose from the options available so that they could look the way they want to.'

Dr Malhotra of Mangalam Medical and Surgical Centre said that for youngsters these days beauty is everything. 'They are judged physically as well. That is why in the race for looking gorgeous, they often opt for cosmetic surgeries. The facial procedures, including face lift, brow lift, chin implantation, cheek implantation, hair transplants, ear reshaping are very popular among girls,' added Malhotra.
