Youth arrested for trying to extort Rs 2 cr from his employer

A 22-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly trying to extort Rs 2 crore from his employer by threatening to kill his son and grandson, police said today.

Azruddin alias Azru, 22, was arrested from near the Madipur metro station around 8 PM on Monday, after a trap was laid for him.

When he came to collect the extortion amount, kept in a bag by the businessman as directed by the police, he was nabbed, a senior police official said.

Kanti Lal, an owner of leather footwear manufacturing company and resident of Paschim Vihar Extension, had filed a complaint on April 12 that he was getting extortion calls on his phone from different telephone numbers from some unknown persons.

"They were demanding Rs two crore and threatened that if not paid, his son Vipul alongwith his grandson, who are residing in Ahmedabad, would be killed," said V Renganathan, ACP West District.

Lal again received call on April 14. Police found out that the SIM of the mobile phone was activated the same day.

During investigation, police traced the shopkeeper who activated the alleged SIM and found it was recharged by a man of age around 20-22 years. But on verification it was found that the identity proof provided by him was fake.

The accused again made a call and demanded Rs 2 crore. He asked Lal to deliver the amount near Madipur Metro Station. At around 8 PM, police and Lal reached the said site, Renganathan said, adding Azru was arrested when he came to collect the amount.

During interrogation Azru, a permanent resident of Bijnaur in Uttar Pradesh who is presently residing in Madipur J J Colony, said he was working as a labourer in the leather footwear manufacturing factory alongwith his brother-in-law.

"As he needed money, so he planned to extort money from his employer. He had taken a loan to marry his sister and he was influenced by a TV serial. Azru also said that as he was aware of the financial status of Lal, so he planned to extort money from him on the pretext of killing his son and grandson who are residing in Ahmedabad," the ACP said.
