The Delhi Police are likely to install Variable Message Sign Boards (VMS) by next year that will be a commuter-friendly initiative as the citizens face long tailbacks everyday.
Despite the fact that the Delhi Traffic Police is active in updating the locations of traffic jams on their official accounts on social networking sites and also on the radio to lessen the hassle of the commuters but still Delhiites are not relieved from the traffic snarls.
A highly placed source in the department told Millennium Post that around 40 to 50 VMSs are likely to be installed in prime locations on the radial roads in the national Capital where commuters often face unpredictable traffic jams on a daily basis.
The source further added that there will be two types of VMS boards — cantilever mounted boards and gantry mounted. The size of the VMS boards will be huge and the message about traffic jams will be flashed on them — both in Hindi and English. The font size of the ticker will also be big so that a motorist can easily read it while driving.
The VMS boards will also flash the message about the alternate routes that could be taken by the commuters to avoid being trapped in the traffic snarls.
“A special survey has been conducted to identify the areas where commuters face regular traffic jams. Accordingly, some prime locations have been hand-picked and they are further classified based on the availability of the alternative route and the volume of traffic. After long analysis, around 50 locations have been short-listed where VMS boards will be installed,” the source added.
“These VMS boards will be linked to the Delhi Traffic control room. Some officials will be appointed to handle the system who will take the help of Google Maps in selecting the alternate route and
then the pre-recorded messages will be flashed on the VMS boards,” a senior traffic police official said.
