Yogendra Yadav supports Common Civil Code

Swaraj India president Yogendra Yadav has supported Law Commission’s initiative for a common civil code in the country and asked the leaders across political parties and communities for a consensus on the issue.

“I urge the government, opposition and community leaders for a dialogue so that the country can move towards Common Civil Code in a spirit of consensus,” said Yadav in a tweet on Friday. Senior Swaraj India leader and eminent Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan has also argued in favour of Common Civil Code in the country.

“Civil Code does not regulate religious or customary practices but only legal relationships between men, women, and children and that must be fair and liberal,” said Prashant Bhushan. The newly-launched party has also issued a statement in support of the Common Civil Code, which was rejected by All India Muslims Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) calling it “war against religious freedom”.

“The aspiration for a uniform, secular personal law for all the citizens of India is expressed in the Directive Principals of our Constitution. This idea is very much in line with the Indian ideal of secularism that permits the state to intervene in religious matters in order to safeguard constitutional values,” said a press statement by the party.
