Yoga Day practice brings city to a halt

Also, rains lashed Delhi on Monday and traffic movement on the Outer Circle in Connaught Place as well as several other areas in the national Capital went for a toss.

Without prior notice, the Inner Circle was closed since early Monday and as a result, commuters coming in cars and two-wheelers faced difficulty.  However, traffic personnel who were deployed at the Outer Circle helped them out with guidance regarding diversions and parking. The Inner Circle remained closed through out the day and is likely to be opened for commuters after 9 am on Tuesday.

Though the rain in the national Capital has resulted in a dip in temperature in the city but massive traffic jams due to waterlogging and potholes made matters worse. Commuters faced severe traffic congestion in several areas including South Extension, Ashram, Moolchand, Dwarka, Noida and Badarpur where huge pile-ups of cars were witnessed.

Even people travelling to Adchini faced severe difficulties due to waterlogging and potholes. Even though the Delhi Traffic Police alerted commuters on their official Facebook page asking them to avoid some stretches due to waterlogging but it was of no avail. Traffic snarls were reported on Ring Road (while coming from ITO to Sarai Kale Khan and crossing the NH-24 flyover) as 4 feet pothole occurred due to rains. The carriageway was partially closed and the repair work begun immediately.
As a result, long traffic snarls could be seen on both the carriageways.

Vehicular movement was affected across the city including ITO, Vikas Marg, South Extension, Khanpur, Mahipalpur, Hari Nagar, IIT crossing, Nehru Place, Yusuf Sarai Market and Munirka.

Traffic also crawled at various major intersections such as Laxmi Nagar, Kashmere Gate, Dwarka, Dhaula Kuan, Sarai Kale Khan, Moolchand, Karkarduma, Rajghat, Kalindi Kunj among others. In some areas, rainwater flooded the basements of flats. Workers from the Public Works Department and Municipal Corporations were seen trying to drain out water from the roads in various areas.

Roads and bylanes in several localities were submerged due to choked drains while in many areas traffic signals were not functioning properly. Localities in and around Yamuna Vihar, Yamuna Pushta also faced problems due to accumulation of water.

Meanwhile, Delhi Traffic Police have made adequate traffic arrangements in New Delhi district as the second International Yoga Day will be led by the Central Industrial Security Force at the Central Park in Connaught Place from 5 am to 7.40 am. In a traffic advisory, a senior police official said: “The Inner Circle of CP, Middle Circle and the radial roads inside the Outer Circle of CP will be closed for traffic from 3 am to 9 am.”
