Yet another suicide at a Metro station

A young woman in her early 20s committed suicide by jumping off the platform on to the street from the Kirti Nagar Metro station on Friday. She was taken to Deen Dayal Hospital where she was declared brought dead. The woman, who was married two and a half years ago, has a daughter aged a year and a half.

This is the 9th case in 2012 where the young boys and girls have opted for Metro stations to end their lives. No action has been taken as yet to handle the situation.

'Investigation is going on to find out the reason that why she jumped off. We are looking into all plausible angles. Based on the identity proof that we have recovered from the spot, we have identified her as Aarti, a resident of Madipur. On the way to the hospital, the woman died,' said a senior police officer.

On Thursday, a 22-year-old girl jumped off the elevated platform of M G Road in Gurgaon. In both cases that took place in Delhi and Gurgaon, the victims were married and they were said to be suffering from depression due to marital issues. According to senior police officers who had interacted with Aarti's family, she was under stress because her in-laws had harassed her for dowry.

'We are looking into the allegations of the family. Along with the identity, we have also recovered a mobile phone. We are planning to go through the call records as well. We are monitoring CCTV footage,' said B S Gurjar, Additional DCP, Railways.

Due to the high suicide rates in Delhi and NCR, DMRC had earlier informed that all the elevated Metro stations would be barred with metal grillwork. Though this would have been a welcome step towards preventing suicide attempts at the stations, as of now, none of the stations has been fitted with grills.
