In yet another jolt to Aam Admi Party (AAP), it’s former MLA from Ambedkar Nagar, Ashok Chauhan joined BJP on Saturday. The former AAP MLA said he quit because there was no “democracy” in the party.
“Only few leaders are running Aam Aadmi party and there is no democracy there. They don’t listen to workers,” Chauhan complained.
After Ashwini Upadhyay and former assembly speaker Maninder Singh Dhir, Chauhan is the third AAP leader to join the saffron party in the last 15 days.
He slammed Arvind Kejriwal and said the former Delhi chief minister had “betrayed” dalits by not fulfilling promises made in the last Assembly polls.
“The Valimiki community supported AAP in the last assembly polls with great expectations from the party. But we feel cheated. Not only dalits, they (AAP) betrayed every section of the society”, said Chauhan who himself belongs to Valmiki community. The Valmiki community has strong presence in assembly constituencies like Seemapuri, Trilokpuri, Gole Market, Minto Road or Mangolpuri, Sultanpuri or Ambedkar Nagar.
In the last assembly elections, Ashok Chauhan had defeated Congress stalwart and four time MLA Prem Singh, who has a history of winning all the elections he had contested. Surprisingly, in the last assembly polls, Singh came third with 19,753 votes while Chauhan polled 36,239 votes.
Chauhan is most likely to get BJP ticket from Ambedkar Nagar, a seat the saffron party has never won in its history. Meanwhile, so far AAP has given tickets to its 18 MLAs out of 28 former legislators for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections.
After defection of Chauhan to BJP, AAP is only left with three former MLAs to consider their names for renomination from their respective constituencies. They are Akhilesh Pati Tripathi from Model Town, Dharmener Singh from Seemapuri and Mahinder Yadav from Vikaspuri. The candidature of Arvind Kejriwal has also not been declared so far. The remaining six legislators either opted out, rebelled or dropped.
