YEIDA mulls integrated waste management system

With a view to provide environment friendly garbage disposal system in the new developing townships along the Yamuna Expressway, the concerned development authority has planned an integrated waste management plant which would be spread over 56,000 hectare.

According to the officers of the Yamuna Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), the plant will cater to the needs of 25 lakh population after becoming fully operational.

According to a senior official of YEIDA, waste management is an important part of the sustainable future of a city and for that the authority has been chalking out a foolproof plan. As per the plan, the door-to-door garbage collection, transportation, segregation and disposal will be organised in a scientific manner. “We have been working on a plan for proper waste management. As the area is developing by leaps and bounds, we have conducted a physical survey, taken an estimate of the population which is expected to reside here in near future, analysed the ground situation and required resources to implement the plan properly,” added the official.

The official said that the plan will be implemented phase wise and for this, consultation is being taken from private firms. “The integrated waste management plan is on the cards after conducting extensive surveys, studies and understanding the YEIDA’s waste generation nature as well as trends. The plan involves collection of waste from all areas of YEIDA including residential, industrial and commercial as well as its transportation, segregation and disposal. Energy generation from garbage/solid waste is the key part of the proposed plan. If things go well, it will be announced officially,” said the official.

The officials claimed that the comprehensive solid waste management plan, which is arguably one of the biggest green initiatives in the region, will serve as a blueprint for how waste will be handled and managed in the YEIDA area for the next 20 years. YEIDA is also getting ready to appoint a technical consultant for the implementation of a master plan for the system. Terms of reference for the appointment of the consultant will be decided by the Board on December 14. “The YEIDA area is in the process of being urbanised and people of the area will start getting possession of plots by early 2016.  Considering the fact that thousands of people will inhabit the area in the near future, there is a need to plan in order to keep the environment clean. This move will help in serving the purpose to a certain extent,” added the official.
