Ye to create history at Omega European Masters
China’s Ye Wo-cheng will create history by becoming the youngest player to tee up at the Omega European Masters when it gets underway at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club here Thursday. The 13-year-old joins the illustrious class of youngsters from China, eager to stamp their mark on the world stage with their youth and talent.
A two-time winner of the US Kids Junior World Championship, Ye beat the tournament record previously held by world number one Tiger Woods with a 12-under-par card and could be a surprise package if he is not overwhelmed by the occasion this week.
‘I’m feeling a little nervous as I’m aware that I’m the youngest player in the field this week. But I tell myself to always stay focus and relax,’ said Ye, of his second professional event following his debut in his home country Open in May where he missed the cut. The young Chinese will have Austria’s Martin Wiegele and Sweden’s Mathias Gronberg for company in his opening two rounds but when asked who he regards as his role model, Ye’s answer resonates with most of his peers.
‘Tiger Woods. I’ve not met Tiger before but if I’ve the chance to speak to him, I’ll ask him how he handles the media pressure like what I’m facing now!’ said Ye.
Bhullar, Jeev lead Indian challenge
CRANS MONTANA (SWITZERLAND): Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar will be riding high on confidence as he returns to the Omega European Masters at the Euro 2.1 million showpiece event here. The four-time Asian Tour winner received a timely confidence boost ahead of his Swiss campaign when he was conferred the prestigious Arjuna Award, India’s second highest sporting honour only last week.
The 25-year-old is now determined to repay the faith bestowed on him by putting up a worthy performance befitting of his status as one of India’s finest golfers. Only three Indian golfers have won an European Tour title - this is a jointly sanctioned event.
