‘Yamuna is causing damage to metro’

The leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly and senior leader of BJP, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, in a statement, strongly supported the march by Yamuna Rakshak Dal and Yamuna Bhakt in Delhi and condemned the government for not accepting their demands.

It is reported that Delhi Metro Corporations’ train compartments’ airconditioning system is getting badly affected due to passing over the Yamuna.

Malhotra said the blame for converting the holy river Yamuna into a dirty drain falls on the Delhi government.  The 22 km long Yamuna river flowing through the capital has now shrunk to only two per cent of its original length and Delhi has contributed to more than 80 per cent of its pollution.

More than 400-450 lakh litres of filthy drainage water without any treatment is allowed to go to into the river, which is sufficient to convert it into a dirty drain, he claimed. According to Malhotra, more than 14 times high court and Supreme Court have expressed their concern during the last 14 years  and passed strictures against Delhi government. But the government failed to take any effective steps and the Yamuna, he said, has turned 14 times dirtier.

Earlier the Supreme Court had mentioned that it was wrong to call Yamuna a river as it has already turned into a drain.

Malhotra said the Delhi government had announced more than hundred times about the cleaning of Yamuna, made several trips abroad and spent thousands of crores on new projects. yet,  the Yamuna remains dirty.

RIVER ACTIVISTS BLOCK DELHI-AGRA HIGHWAY

Thousands of activists, on a march from Vrindavan to Delhi demanding release of Yamuna water from Hathini Kund barrage, blocked the Delhi-Agra highway and rail route on Monday, disrupting traffic movement majorly. However, the traff`ic movement was soon restored, Senior Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar Yadav said. The activists, who started the 10-day march from Vrindavan on Friday, were earlier supposed to enter Haryana on Monday. ‘After reaching Kosi Kalan town yesterday, the locals along with the villagers decided to block the highway,’ Sunil Singh, acting president of Yamuna Rakshak Dal that is leading the campaign said. The activists blocked the Delhi-Agra highway around 9 am on Monday by parking trucks and other vehicles, Yadav said, adding that they later also blocked the Delhi-Agra rail route and stopped goods and passenger trains. After police intervention, the marchers are now heading towards Haryana as per their schedule, the SSP said, adding that the situation is under control. Over 10,000 marchers, including saints, volunteers, Bharatiya Kisan Union activists and members of religious and social groups, are participating in the campaign. Their two major demands are that at least 50 per cent of water from Hathini Kund barrage is released into Yamuna and concrete steps are taken to stop the discharge of pollutants into the river.
