Yamuna crosses danger mark, people evacuated

With the release of 13.50 lakh cusecs of flood water from the Hath Kund barrage in Haryana, Delhi faces a risk of floods on Wednesday.
The water level of Yamuna crossed the danger mark of 204.83 metres at 1pm and reached 205.24 metres at 2.30pm, officials in the flood and irrigation department said. People from low-lying areas along the Yamuna were on Tuesday evacuated as the water level in the river crossed the danger mark around.
Officials said the water level in the river is expected to rise further.. It is expected that the water level would touch 207.05 metre by Wednesday afternoon. The Old Railway Bridge may be closed in the eventuality of the water level rising to 206 metres.
‘The water level in Yamuna continues to be above danger level. The level at 5pm at Old Railway Bridge was 205.5 metre on Tuesday.
The administration of respective districts was pressed into immediate action and directed to complete the evacuation process which has since been completed,’ sources said. The city government had started the evacuation of people living close to the river bank on Monday.
