The water level in the Yamuna river reached the maximum level this year on Monday evening crossing the alarm point, even though it remained below the danger mark.
According to the officials of the flood department, the water level of the river reached its maximum of 204.32 m at 5 pm on Monday due to release of over 80,000 cusecs of water from Hathini Kund dam in Haryana on Saturday. The river crossed the alarm mark of 204 m on Monday afternoon and was flowing at 204.18 m at 3.00 pm. ‘Haryana released around 41,364 cusecs of water at 3 pm on Monday. They are releasing water in the river everyday but the situation is under control and there is no fear of flood,’ said a senior officer of the flood department in Delhi.
Meanwhile, Delhi received heavy rainfall on Monday evening, with the city recording 43 mm rainfall between 8.30am and 8.30pm on Monday.
The city witnessed a torrential downpour on Monday, which caused heavy traffic snarls and waterlogging across the city. Rains started at 6am. ‘Within minutes, roads were flooded due to choked drains. In some areas, water from the streets entered houses and shops. Drivers had a harrowing time. At a few places the rainwater was knee-deep, ‘ says Prachi Joshi, a college-goer.
The downpour brought down the maximum temperature by nearly two degrees but caused major traffic snarls. Traffic came to a halt for almost two hours in various parts of the city due to waterlogged roads. Important roads and areas like Ring Road, I.T.O., Aurobindo Marg, Laxmi Nagar, Moti Bagh, Badarpur, Ashram Chowk, Saket, M.G.Road and Kashmere Gate were affected by the traffic snarl.
‘The rain gauges measured 0.6 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm’, a MeT official said.
The maximum temperature for the day was recorded at 34.5 degree Celsius, one degree above normal and up from Sunday’s 32.9 degrees, while the minimum was 26 degrees, normal for this period of the year and as against Sunday’s 25 degrees. The humidity was between 65 and 97 per cent. The weatherman has predicted a ‘partly cloudy sky’ for Tuesday with light rains or thundershowers in some area. The temperature will oscillate between 25 and 32 degree Celsius.
