Xi asks party men to be more tolerant of criticism

Bracing to take over as China's President early next month, Xi Jinping has asked the ruling Communist Party to be more tolerant of criticism and receptive to the views of non-communists as the party launched a pilot scheme making declaration of assets mandatory for officials.

‘The CPC (Communist Party of China) should be able to put up with sharp criticism, correct mistakes if it has committed them and avoid them if it has not,’ Xi, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, was quoted as saying by state-run Xinhua news agency on Thursday.

‘Non-CPC personages should meanwhile have the courage to tell the truth, speak words jarring on the ear, and truthfully reflect public aspirations,’ he said seeking to change the image of the party as the most intolerant criticism.

Criticism from non-communist personages could help the CPC to identify, analyse and solve problems, said Xi who would be taking over as President early next month after the retirement of Hu Jintao.

He was expected to be formally elected by the National People's Congress (NPC), which is scheduled to meet on March 3 here.

59-year-old Xi asked CPC committees at all levels to readily accept and welcome supervision from non-communist parties and personages so as to improve their work style and quality.

At on Thursday's meeting, Xi also appreciated the hard work of non-communist parties and personages in the past five years.

CPC has monopoly over power permitted eight minor non-communist parties to function with limited activities. In another development, state television has announced that the party has launched a new pilot scheme in Guangdong province making it mandatory for the officials to declare assets.
