A writ petition was filed on Tuesday to annul a landmark deal reached among Nepal’s four major political parties to promulgate a new constitution ending <g data-gr-id="16">months-long</g> deadlock.
A writ filed by an advocate seeking annulment of the 16-point deal claimed that the deal has breached Article 138 of the Interim Constitution.
In the agreement, there is a provision to name and demarcate the federal units by setting up a separate commission.
The advocate argued that the Interim Constitution has the provision that the new constitution could
not be drafted without delineating the federal units. The deal envisions an eight province federal structure without naming and delineating the federal units. Demarcation of federal units before drafting the constitution is one of the major demands of the Madhes-based political parties. Last week, Nepal’s Constitution drafting committee had started working on preparing the draft of the new constitution within 15 days.
A breakthrough in the long-pending <g data-gr-id="15">Constitution-writing</g> process emerged after Nepal’s warring political parties struck a landmark deal to over issues related to the statute.
