Manchester Tragedy: Salient Points

Witnesses have spoken of the 'devastation' that followed the attack in Manchester Arena on Monday night, which killed 22 people and injured dozens more. Parents of children who were at the Ariana Grande concert described how they could 'smell burning' and see 'bodies everywhere', as well as nuts and bolts strewn across the floor, after the blast struck.

ISIS said one of its members carried out the attack at Manchester Arena. ISIS supporters celebrated on social media on Tuesday after a blast at a concert venue in Manchester killed at least 22 people. British police have arrested a 22-yr-old man named Salman Abedi in connection with the attack.

The explosive device used in the Manchester terror attack was worryingly sophisticated, according to a UK-based security expert. Police have said it was a 'home-made' improvised explosive device. Witnesses have said there were nuts and bolts packed into the bomb.

The British Transport Police has also revealed that the explosion occurred in the foyer area which illustrates the vulnerability of mass gatherings such as Monday evening's concert which had hosted 21,000 attendees and has overtones of other recent tragic attacks.

The first victim has been named as 18-year-old student Georgina Callander. She was studying health and social care at Runshaw College in Lancashire. Social media is helping people search for missing relatives following the terror attack at Manchester Arena.

No decision has yet been made on whether two big sporting events will go ahead in Manchester at the weekend. The Great City Games, featuring a number of leading athletes, is due to be held in Manchester city centre (Deansgate) on Friday. It is an unticketed and a free event for the public. The Great Manchester Run — a public half marathon and 10k run — is scheduled to take place on Saturday.

World leaders on Tuesday expressed shock and horror at the suicide bombing. Queen Elizabeth II condemned the attack as an "act of barbarity". Donald Trump bemoaned loss of life at the hands of 'evil losers in life'. Putin expressed deep condolences and extended cooperation with Britain.
