Bangladesh appoints General Aziz Ahmed as army chief

Dhaka: Bangladesh today appointed Lieutenant General Aziz Ahmed as the country's new army chief for a three-year tenure.

"Bangladesh Army's BA-2424 Lieutenant General Aziz Ahmed, BGBM, PBGM, BGBMS, PSC, G, Quarter Master General . . . Has been appointed as new chief of Bangladesh Army with effect from June 25, 2018," a defence ministry statement said.

It said Ahmed, currently serving as the military's quarter master general, who previously served as director general of paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) would assume his office with an elevated rank and status of a full military general.

He would succeed General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Haque, who is set to retire on June 25.

Ahmed served as the Director General of BGB from 2012 to November, 2016.

The new army chief's appointment came a week after Air Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat took over as the country's air force chief.
