Workload not yet assigned to DU teachers

University of Delhi (DU) is likely to miss its date to start classes for the current academic session as the administration has not yet assigned the responsibilities for faculty members. According to the academic calendar as posted on the university website, the classes should begin from 21 July.
‘Generally our workload used to be given in April for the next academic session. But this year it has been delayed. Since the Four Year Undergraduate programme (FYUP) has been rolled back, there is no clarity over the courses. Workload hasn’t been assigned and time tables need to be made accordingly. Things are getting delayed,’ said Rakesh Ranjan, Professor, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC).

Apart from students, even teachers are also facing problems because of the same.
‘I daily get calls from students asking what will be taught to them in the next semester. But I myself don’t know. I have to prepare for lectures, but I can’t do it unless I have clarity over the courses. Moreover, courses or papers have not been decided yet, due to which workload can’t be assigned and hence, even time tables cannot be prepared. It is also affecting recruitment process. How will teachers be hired if university doesn’t know how many classes are involved in teaching a subject. Entire academic calendar has been affected. Even a day’s loss in semester means a lot,’ said Shewta Sachdeva, Professor, Miranda House, DU.

The university on Thursday has asked Committee of Courses to send their recommendations by 12 July. ‘The matters of workload and time tables and clarity over the courses is in the process. Let us see what will happen,’ said another professor in DU.
