According Delhi traffic police data, women drivers pay greater heed to the law than their male counterparts. Data collected between 1-15 March, 2014, shows that 37,898 men violated traffic norms, as compared to only 4 women drivers. Women also receive fewer challans and the numbers of accidents that involve women are much lower. Â
According to the traffic police data, from 1 January to 15 March, 2014 approximately 1,60,850 men were fined for jumping traffic signals, while only 8 women were booked for a similar offence.
A closer look into data further shows that from 1-15 March, 2014, approximately 4,455 male drivers were booked for over speeding, while no woman was booked for the same offence. From 1 January to 15 March, 2014, approximately 20,485 male drivers were fined for over speed driving while only 7 women were booked for a similar offence.
From 1 January to 15 March, 2014, approximately 1,582 male were fined for drunken driving, while no females were booked for a similar offence.Â
‘No doubt women drivers are usually more law-abiding compared to men. You will hardly find any woman driver jumping a red light or changing lanes suddenly,’ said a senior traffic police official. The official further said that women get fewer challans and the number of accidents involving women is much lower.
The relationship between risky driving behaviour and the likelihood of being involved in a collision has been closely linked to both age and gender. This challenges the popular notion that women are unsafe drivers, said the official. Although there are more male drivers on the city roads, the number of female drivers are constantly on the rise’, said the official.
